  • What do you think of the Jackie Robinson rotunda at Citi Field?

I was wondering how you guys look at the Jackie Robinson rotunda at Citi Field.

At one hand I think it is a good thing that he will be honored permanently. But at the other hand I have a weird feeling about this.

He was never a Mets player. What I read lately, the Mets were inaugurated as the Giants' replacement. So there is absolutely no tie with Jackie Robinson.

So what do you think about this?

I am really starting to question the ulterior motives behind these Jackie Robinson questions and comments. Its as if I am talking baseball with Sean Hannity.
I for one, love the idea that the Mets honor their NL heritage in New York.

I am only quoting what I have read. That is why I wrote it that way. I wonder if that is a fact.

When I look at the colour of the original cap, I also think that the Mets honour both NL teams from NY.

I am only curious how the Brooklyn fans think about this rotunda. Nothing more, nothing less. There is nothing behind it.

      Why are you so suspicious?

i heard that was a myth, and that the orange and blue represent the "official" colors of new york city.
the knicks, islanders and titans (lacrosse) also wear the "ny" colors.

Obviously the guy doesn't understand thing one about New York and it's baseball heritage.
Nor does he have even the remotest clue what the implications of Robinson's action meant to our nation.

Nothing must be allowed to in any way take away from the importance of Jackie's achievements to baseball in America and this area and the Mets were under a lot of pressure to name the Stadium for Robinson but obviously, and really who can blame them, they couldn't pass up selling the naming rights to Citibank. But their decision to honor Robinson the way they did was absolutely the right thing to do.

Having said that, of course, it would be far superior for all of us if the Brooklyn Dodgers were moving into their new Stadium next year and the rotunda at their new ball park in New York where the franchise belongs was being named for him...but far better here than on the left coast where an imposter organization is parading around as if they are the Dodgers.

The other arguments, about who the Mets are, don't belong here right now although personally, there is no way they could ever replace the Brooklyn Dodgers but that's is absolutely for another time and another place.

I really like the idea of the Robinson Rotunda. I have talked to my parents at length about this and the retro ball park. They are die hard Bklyn Dodger fans.(My dad still gripes about the passed ball in '41). They agree with honoring Jackie. They also would like to see some kind of NY National league museum at the new park; how the Mets followed the Dodgers and the Giants.

Personally , I think Robinson stands out due to the huge implications surrounding him. On a pure baseball level, I think Pee Wee Reese would get the nod as 'greatest Dodger'.

My parents also feel the Mets should honor a NY Giant at the new field. I suggested Mel Ott and they were 100% behind it, even though my dad said he "hated him when he was playing". Ott should get the nod over many other qualified Giants (Mays only played 5 full seasons in Manhattan).

Can they name RF after Ott ? CF split between Willie and the Duke?

And to answer the question about Jackie not being a METS player, who cares.
NYC was known as a national league town way before the Mets. And until they allowed the Yanks to steal the spotlight 10 years ago, the TV networks still considered NYC a National League town when it came to TV markets.

Jeepers creepers man, you're going too far now !
Why don't they just dress the ticker takers in Giant uni's & the ushers in Dodger shirts. We'll call Willie 'Leo' and cover all the bases !

What would be really cool is if the hallways, foodcourts etc honored all of the NL NY players with photos etc.
Mel Ott, Hubbell, Mathewson, Mays, Campanella, Snider, Hodges etc along with the great Mets. Kind of a NL in NY Hall of Fame.

                    That's a really good idea.
It would be even cooler if we renamed the food after Dodgers and Giants too.
I think it would be awesome if we could just go whole hog and move the team out west.

Even IF I do not understand a thing about NY's baseball heritage, is it strange since I am not an American?

I absolutely understand the value of Robinson breaking the colour barrier.

Aparently you are not smart enough to understand my question.

Questioning motives is like shooting buckshot at vapor. You can't miss but it really doesn't do any good. Regardless, of the Mets motives we should just place a value on the deed itself.

As a native Brooklynite I have never seen the Mets as the heirs or protectors of the Dodger legacy. If they want to wear orange they are the Giants progeny.

Nonetheless, if they wish to build a memorial to the great Robinson I'm okay with that. Jackie's meaning to the game transcends the Dodgers and embraces all of baseball.

As for the Mets wishing to capitalize on the dual history of the Dodgers and Giants because they are the NL NY team, hmmmmm. I can't say that thrills me as there is no link, other than geography, between the three teams. On the other hand I'd rather see the great players of these teams remembered in NY rather than just being drawings on the fence of some California team.

Ease up on Yankeefanbiscuit (wow I actually stuck up for a guy with "YANKEEFAN" in his title being that I hate all things Yankees) a lot of Mets fans have complained that CitiField has too much Dodger stuff and there are a lot of people who labeled the original Mets as more of a Giants replacement than a Dodger replacement since the initial owners were Giants people, also they had the name "New York" and not "Brooklyn"

Thanks pal. That's what I am trying to say. Like I said, I have read that somewhere. But slowly I have also learned that not everything you read in books or newspapers is the truth.

If I were a mets fan, I'd be a little upset about all dodger and although to lesser degree giants stuff. I'ts almost like your saying your own teams history isn't good enough. With that said, absolutely every team should honor Jackie Robinson and Larry Doby too, by the way. Maybe, wilpon is making a play to foster a further connection to the Dodgers before he tries to buy the name? Before I get the rocks, that wasn't serious. A lot of mets fans would scream
and they'd have every right. I do think Wilpon would do it If he could. That's why something like an ebbets field museum and exihbition field would be perfect, as the giants were our main rivals honoring them there (much as we would have loathed it back then) would be most appropriate. battlin bake, the dodger dynamo
