  • OUR Royal Blue/Ivory SATIN Uniforms!

Does anyone remember the year, or years, that WE wore those SATIN Home uniforms? Was it 1947/1948, or earlier? I believe they were used only for night games.

    Dear Deb (and Friends):

I believe it was earlier, possibly 1945. Larry MacPhail introduced the "night satin" as a gimmick to make our boys shine under the lights. The novelty wore off about as fast as the satin wore out.

The Dodgers had TWO sets of satins. One for home (white) and one for the road (powder blue).
you can take the Dodgers out of Brooklyn, but you can't take the Brooklyn out of the DODGERS

            Home Satin Uni's

The Dodgers' home (white) satin uniforms had two versions. The one pictured above, and another with thick blue piping around the collar, running down the top of the short sleeves, and down the outside of the pant-leg.

              Time Magazine, March 6,1944

Dem Bums is going formal. For their 28 night games this season, the Brooklyn Dodgers will wear glistening uniforms of satin—white piped with blue for home games, blue piped with white for road games. Purpose: to keep fans' minds off the quality of the baseball, which will be a motley of under & over draft age, piped with 4-Fs.

Dodger Deb: My research found that the Dodgers first had satin uniforms (for night games only) in 1944. The idea was scrapped for a while, and made a "comeback" in 1948. Vin Scully says the satin uniforms were then used in later years by managers and coaches during spring training.

Were these uniforms pronounced satin or sateen?

Many thanks, Pete and SO'55, for all the info on OUR Satin uniforms.

Lelands has one of these uniforms up for bid presently. It is said to be one of JOE HATTEN'S, and is closing in on $8,000, last I heard.

                        Sateen is a different fabric.

Here's the 1948 Joe Hatten uniform Leland's has up for auction:

                          Can anyone confirm that?

The only satin uniforms I've ever seen have had piping. I'm more inclined to believe the appearance of the solid white uniforms seen in the picture above is a trick of the light.

We tried contacting Leland's in hopes of obtaining any information regarding Joe's uniform. It apparently came from a private collector. As far as we know, no family members have any of Lefty Joe's uniforms in their possession. Zee was shocked to hear of the uniform going for almost $10,000! We always wished that we had one of his uniforms to cherish.
