On April 9, 1947, 59 years ago today, Commissioner Happy Chandler suspended Manager Leo Durocher for the entire 1947 season for "consorting with gamblers".
That was a wild and pivotal year for the Dodgers. Jackie came up and as Red Barber said, "All Hell Broke Loose".
It was a turning point in the franchise and for baseball in general.
In late 1947 or early 1948 the Sporting News polled a large number of sportswriters about the biggest sports story of 1947. Durocher's suspension was the baseball story that was mentioned the most.
