  • Brooklyn Browns?

I saw this on the St Louis Browns board. Anyone ever heard about this before?

    Brooklyn Browns

    THE SPORTING NEWS 10/12/44

    EVERY SERIES HAS ITS RUMOR
No World Series appears to be complete without at least one 14-karat rumor. This year's fanciest tale concerned the possible withdrawal of the Browns from St. Louis. According to one informant, Don Barnes, dissatisfied with the Brownie gate during the pennant race, will seek permission at the December meeting to shift the franchise to Brooklyn, and if denied, to Pittsburgh. But major league clubs don't switch locations so easily. One owner's "no" is enough to block any shift, and it is difficult to imagine Branch Rickey or Bill Benswanger accepting competition from a championship outfit such as the Browns. Barnes apparently has cooled on what was once a desire to move into Coast League territory in LA. However, it is a pretty safe bet that the '44 champs will be operating at the same old stand @ Grand and Dodier next season.

(Prior to selling out the '44 season finale with the Yankees, the Friday DH drew only 6,172 while Saturday's game drew 12,982.)

After the war the company which employed my father toyed with the idea of moving the Browns to NYC, to play in a new stadium approximately where Shea Stadium was eventually built. Nothing came of it, of course, but it was a serious consideration at that time, and it was really felt that New York City could support four teams in the early post-war years.

I think NYC metro area could support 4 teams in MLB even today. Heck there are 3 NHL teams within 30 miles of each other!
