  • O'Malley getting into baseball. Huh?

I don't get this family. First Walter takes over the Dodgers and decides to move the team to LA where he would have to pay for a stadium as opposed to taking a free one in Queens. Then a generation later his son sells the team saying that it was for estate planning reasons and that major league baseball teams couldn't be owned by individuals and families anymore. He sells the team for $350 million and then 15 years later he tried to buy it back and then winds up paying $800 million for the SD Padres. Huh?

You've been misinformed. Peter O'Malley is not involved in the padres new ownership group.

The new ownership group includes Kevin and Brian O’Malley, the sons of former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Peter O’Malley. Peter and Tom Seidler — the nephews of Peter O’Malley — also will be involved in the deal.
you can take the Dodgers out of Brooklyn, but you can't take the Brooklyn out of the DODGERS

The Flushing stadium would not have been free for the Dodgers. According to Forever Blue the City of New York expected the Dodgers to contribute a substantial sum toward its construction.

San Diego native Ron Fowler is actually the "head" of the group and Phil Mickelson, another native San Diegan, is also involved.

Peter was right when he said one family, or one person ownership, is not realistic anymore in the current economy of MLB. All of the bidders for the Dodgers, including O'Malley, were made up of groups of multiple investors. O'Malley's failed bid for the Dodgers was to be funded primarily by a South Korean conglomerate. O'Malley would have had Magic Johnson's role as the "face" of the franchise, but not the one of principle investor.

IIRC the Steinbrenners only own 55% of the Yankees.
