    Yes, Newk might have gotten to the majors a year earlier if the racial barrier had fallen sooner. Then he lost the 1952 and 1953 seasons to military service during the Korean War and after his magnificent 1956 season when he went 27-7, drinking problems effected the tail end of his career and probably shortened it by a couple of years.
    Instead of winning 150 games, Newk might have won 225 or more, with a high winning percentage. He might have finished with a record similar to or better than Bob Lemon's or Hal Newhouser's and that would have given him a shot at making the Hall Of Fame.

    A fine pitcher who might have been a HOFer had he not lost at least a year at the beginning of his career, 2 years of his absolute prime to the military, and several seasons later due to his drinking issues. He deserves a lot of credit for getting his life under control.
