  • Youpi!

Youpi was hired by the Montreal Canadiens. Good to see that the Montreal Expos will remain alive.
Unlike most other team sports, in which teams usually have an equivalent number of players on the field at any given time, in baseball the hitting team is at a numerical disadvantage, with a maximum of 5 players and 2 base coaches on the field at any time, compared to the fielding team's 9 players. For this reason, leaving the dugout to join a fight is generally considered acceptable in that it results in numerical equivalence on the field, and a fairer fight.

Odd to see Youppi! with the Canadiens jersey on. It's tough to find a better looking jersey than the Canadiens red, but it looks weird on him.
From now until the end of September, I'll be chronicling in real time on Twitter the 1946 season of the International league's Montréal Royals, when Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in professional baseball. Check it out: https://twitter.com/Royals_46season

I can't wait to see him at the Centre Bell, it's funny to say, but he was one of my number 1 preoccupations when I heard that the Expos would be moving. I still believe he was the coolest mascot in all of baseball. I also used to own little Youppi! figurines with wich I played as a kid, I wonder what became of them :noidea .

I still have the little plastic Youppi the Expos gave as a stadium give away in 1990.

Just wanna make a little comment about Youppi, maybe you know it already or you read it in a Metro (french free subway magazine in Montreal), but Youppi is the only mascot inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame with the San Diego chicken and the Phillie Phanatic! That makes at least two expo cap wearing legends in the Hall of Fame . I think he looked better in the Expos Jersey though, maybe I'll have to get used to his new uniform.

I didn't know youppi was in the Hall of fame. I think he should go for the double-play and try to get into the hockey HOF somewhere down the road. This... creature, is really setting the standard for the mascots of the 21st century.

I was never a big Youppi fan but I can see how the kids enjoyed him/her?

One of my fondest memories of the Expos' final years is when Youppi (who must have been thirsty that day) was wavering back and forth then started to dance and fell off the Expos' dugout on to the field. I guess mascots shouldn't drink and dance
