There was never any consideration given to the Giants going to Shea Stadium.

Could they still be at 155th and Eighth?

As recently as last week, I made a trip up to the site of the former Polo Grounds. One thing which clearly stood out was the police presence on a sunny fall afternoon. Parking was still a disaster. No way, the Giants would have survived at 155th and 8th Avenue. The cost of refurbishing the park would have been prohibitive. The construction of a new park on the site would not have been feasible because the same problems that existed before the Giants left for San Francisco appear to still exist. Add this to the fact, that Mr. Stoneham injected himself entirely too much into the baseball operation. Chub Feeney, his nephew, was the GM. Other than 1951 and 1954 under the stewardship of Leo Durocher, the Giants were primarily a second division ball club. Once Durocher resigned subsequent to the 1955 season, the inevitability of a move became more pronounced. Stoneham was a benevolent owner the players liked him but he was no match for Robert Moses and the City of New York who wanted the site for low income housing.
