Seems that the family of the guy who snatched it from Bobby's head originally lent it to the HOF. They have now reclaimed it and placed it on auction.

Looks to be in pristine condition.

I think he peaked at about $35,000 a year after 1951 for a few years, then it went downhill after he got traded to Milwaukee. He probably started out in 1947 at about $5,000 like any other rookie then, then went up the hill.

Just a wild guess, but I'd think his salary for his 14-year major league career was a little north or south of about $300,000. It's only a guess, though.

Horrible right? I have pictures of this hat from the hall. They also had his cleats and his glove as well. Wonder if they are still there? Such an iconic item should be enjoyed by all.

Don't know, but according to the CPI Inflation Calculator, $173,000 in today's money is equivalent to $19,549.30 in 1951 dollars.

The ball was never in the Hall of course, because it was never brought forward. Brian Biegel's documentary and excellent book, both titled "Miracle Ball" has solved the mystery of the most sought after piece of sports memorabilia of all time.

I don't recall reading about players returning caps back to their club, even in the frugal 50's. So I'm saying no to the club "owning" it.

Taking players caps was quite common at the time - as was fans on the field of play after big games or in the case of the Polo Grounds - EVERY game to simply exit I swiped a cap myself at a AAA Championship game in the late 80's. Taking it back the next year to get an autograph, he flipped it over to sign the underside of the bill, saw his number written there... Gave me a look at first of "you're the one!" Then signed it grinning.

There is a video out there of the Cardinals winning a pennant and the UMPIRE swiped a cap. The player turned around and caught him, as it was almost immediately after the infielders gathered together to elebrate and no way anfan coukd have got out there that fast. Might have been 1964? No later than that I don't think... But it was in color and obviously in Sportsmans Park.

The umpire stealing a cap came after game 7 of the 1967 Series. The ump just ran right up to the Cardinal players celebrating around the mound, swiped Cards SS Dal Maxvil's hat, then ran off. Maxvill looked at him and smiled. Video is on YouTube, but I am on my phone at the moment... Embedding vids with my phone is about as easy as explaining obamacare to kindergarteners.
