  • Bob Cerv (1925-2017) Slugger & All-Star outfielder with Kanas City

Former Kansas City Athletics outfielder, Bob Cerv passed away in his native Nebraska, on April 6, less than one month shy of his 92nd birthday. He was a collegiate star at he University of Nebraska who went on to play 12 seasons in the majors, mostly with the New York Yankees and the Kansas City Athletics.
In 1958 Cerv was selected to the American League All-Star team in what proved to be his best season by a good margin. He bashed 38 home runs that year and drove in 104 runs for Kansas City. At the end of his career Cerv played on two expansion teams in their inaugural years, first with the American League's Los Angeles Angels in 1961 and then with the National League's Houston Colt .45's in 1962.

    A bit of nostalgia

In 1960 Bob Cerv appeared on 2 episodes of the original Home Run Derby TV show. (Spoiler Alert) In episode 17 he defeated current champion Frank Robinson 8 to 7 and in episode 18 he was defeated by challenger Bob Allison 4 to 3.

Both episodes are available on YouTube and are fun to watch for those seeking to get a feel for old school baseball at the tail end of the "Golden Age."
