  • Happy 90th Birthday, Mickey Vernon

Mickey Vernon, who won the 1946 and 1953 A.L. batting titles as a Washington Senator turned 90 today. He's also in the top five or so in most career fielding categories for first baseman and he still holds the career fielding record for most double plays participated in by a first baseman. He's been on the ballot for Veterans Committee elections lately, but it is a shame he never got more serious Hall Of Fame consideration.
Washington, you may have enjoyed his performances, but he came from the Philadelphia area (Marcus Hook Twshp., Delaware County, just outside Philly), and Philadelphians are proud that he has lived in their area all his life.

      May he live forever!

I saw my first game when Dad took me to see Mickey get his silver bat for having won the '53 batting title.

      My all-time hero player.
